The 2010 Nantucket Nectars Sunset Music Series
“No matter what genre of music makes your heart sing, it will all be coming your way in the 2010 Nantucket Nectars Sunset Music Series lineup!” Throughout July and early August, you can enjoy the sounds of nationally acclaimed performers while surrounded by boats and stunning sunsets over the bridge and bay. This year’s performers include Boz Scaggs, CAKE, and The Blind Boys of Alabama to name a few. The 2010 Newport Summer Comedy Series
“The Star-studded lineup guaranteed to make you laugh yourself sideways!” From early July to mid August you can walk down to the Yachting Center to see comedians Brian Regan, Lisa Lampanelli, Bill Burr and others take the stage. The Newport BridgeFest
This unique music series “bridges” the week between the folk and jazz festivals. This music series runs from August 2-5 and features local musicians each evening. The highlight of the week comes on August 4th when the James Montgomery Band performs in support of the local Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. To go to their website, click here.

The Newport WineFest
“This one-of-a-kind event will offer and ultimate wine and food experience with tastings from hundreds of world-class wines, spirits, specialty beers, and gourmet dishes prepared by the finest local and regional chefs.” This event is held Friday, August 20 from 6-11pm, Saturday, August 21 from 5-10pm and Sunday August 22 from 12-5pm. The Newport Arts Festiveal
At the Newport Arts Festival, you’ll view the work of select regional and national artists, including wearable art, wood and glass work, paintings, photography, pottery and more. The Newport Waterfront Irish Festival

Candlelight Music Tour
The Candlelight Music Tour at Astors’ Beechwood takes place every Tuesday at 7 pm until October 28. There, you will tour the Astors’ Beechwood and visit with the Astor Family by candlelight. Once your tour is finished, you will go to the ballroom to enjoy a musical performance. Throughout the tour, “the Beechwood Theatre Company brings the past to life as they re-create Newport’s golden era.”

International Polo Series
Come watch the USA polo team take on England and South Africa in September for the International Polo Series at the Glenn Farms in Portsmouth! USA plays England on September 5th at 4pm, and South Africa on September 19 at 4 pm. Be there for the finals on September 26 at 4 pm! On September 12 at 4 pm, come see the Newport Pro-am. There, “top polo pros in New England… and highly skilled amateurs…take to the field” to raise money for intercollegiate polo clubs.

Big Band Night
Big Band night is held on September 23 from 7:30 to 9:30 pm at Astors’ Beechwood. The 18 piece band plays big band style music and you can dance to traditional, swing and Latin favorites or just enjoy the wonderful sounds of Swinglane.

Harvest Fair
The Harvest Fair takes place on September 3-4 at the Norman Bird Sanctuary. While there, you can “enjoy food, entertainment, games…and old-time favorites: the Mud Pit and the Monkey Bridge.  Over 80 crafters present their unique work, with many people getting a jump on their holiday shopping.”

Newport International Polo Series
Come see the 18th Polo series held at the Glenn Farms in Portsmouth, a fifteen minute drive from the Malbone. It features Polo teams from around the world who have come to compete against the USA in “thrilling 6-chukker polo matches, played on gorgeous thoroughbread horses.” The Polo series continues “a tradition of international polo begun over 130 years ago in Newport, home of the first Polo club in America.”
The polo series is held every Saturday throughout August and September. Each Match begins at 5:00 in August and a 4:00 in September.

Summer Jazz Series at Greenvale Vineyards
Enjoy a Jazz concert every Saturday from 1-4 at Greenvale Vineyards in Portsmouth, a 10-15 minute drive from the Malbone.  The concert is held in a stable that was turned into a Tasting room. Explore the 24 acres of grapes and just enjoy the wonderful historic scenery.

Afternoon Tea

Today for afternoon tea we are having a wide selection of treats. We are serving:

Here is the recipe for a glazed strawberry tart that we will be serving tomorrow.

Glazed Strawberry Tart
   Ingredients:
       -1 1/3 cups all purpose flour
       -1/2 cup finely ground almonds
       -1/3 cup sugar
       -1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
       -1/4 teaspoon salt
       -6 tablespoons cold butter, cut into pieces
       -1 egg
       -1 teaspoon vanilla extract
       -3/4 cup seedless raspberry or strawberry jam
       -1 teaspoon lemon juice
       -2 pints strawberries, hulled and sliced in half
       -Sweetened whipped cream (optional)

1. Stir together flour, almonds, sugar, lemon rind and salt in a large bowl. Cut butter into flour mixture with a pastry blender or 2 knives, until coarse crumbs form. Whisk together egg and vanilla in a small bowl; stir into flour mixture until a dough forms. Shape into a disk. Wrap in plastic; refrigerate for at least 1 hour or overnight.

2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a baking sheet. Place dough on baking sheet; pat into a 10 inch circle, forming a high edge. Pierce bottom of dough all over with a fork. Bake until slightly browned, about 25 minutes. Place baking sheet on a wire rack and let cool for about 10 minutes; transfer shell to rack to cool completely.

3. Melt jam with lemon juice in a small saucepan over low heat until spreadable. Spread 1/2 cup jam mixture over bottom of shell arrange berries on top, cut sides down. Brush with remaining jam mixture. Serve with whipped cream on the side if desired.

Makes about 8 servings.

Newport Music Festival

The Newport Music Festival is having its 40th anniversary season July 11-July 27. There are a total of 60 concerts being held over the 17 days with 35 different artists from around the globe. You will be able to see concerts ranging from an eleven year-old pianist to a world-renowned trumpeter. All of these concerts are held in the famous Newport Mansions. 

The morning concerts are usually held at 11 am, afternoon concerts are usually at 4 pm or 6 pm, and evening concerts are at 9 pm at the Breakers. While most of the concerts are held in the day, there are also two Midnight Concerts at Marble House. Tickets are $25. If you aren’t a night owl, there are also “Box Lunch Concerts.” Morning concerts are at 11 am followed by lunch around 1 pm. The optional lunch begins at 1 pm prior to the afternoon concert at 2 pm. The boxed lunches are included in the price of your ticket for mornings and are optional for the 2 pm concerts. During the seventeen days, there are four box lunch concerts at Belle Mer Salon on Goat Island. Tickets cost $45 per person for the mornings and $35 (without lunch) and $45 (with lunch) for afternoons.

On Wednesday July 23rd, there is a Gala at The Breakers Mansion. The evening begins at 7 p.m. with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the Terrace of the Breakers. The performance is the North American Debut performance by Icelandic superstar tenor Garðar Thór Cortes at 8 pm. There is an après-concert reception to meet the artist with coffee and desserts to finish off the night. Tickets are $100 per person, a portion of which is tax deductible.

There are two concert series:

The “Amo, Amas, Amadeus” Series where you can hear all 18 of Mozart’s piano sonatas preformed from memory by German pianist Michael Endres, in a series of five concerts. Tickets are $100.
The Victor Borge Composer Series in honor of legendary Entertainer Victor Borge. The Festival will present 17 afternoon concerts featuring handpicked selections from many of music’s greatest composers.

White Chip Meringue Dessert Squares

     Guests have been asking for this recipe constantly. This is our first recipe post, hope you like it!

White Chip Meringue Dessert Squares

Crust:

• 2 cups all purpose flour
• 1/2 cup powdered sugar
• 1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened

Topping:

• 2 cups (12-ounce package) Nestle Toll House Premier White Morsels
• 1 1/4 cups sliced or chopped nuts, divided
• 3 egg whites
• 1 cup packed brown sugar

For Crust: Combine flour and powdered sugar in a medium bowl. Cut butter in with pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press onto bottom of ungreased 9 x 13 inch baking pan. Bake in preheated 375 F oven for 10-12 minutes or until set.

For Topping: Sprinkle morsels and 1 cup nuts over hot crust. Beat egg whites in small mixer until frothy. Gradually add brown sugar. Beat until stiff peaks form. Gently spread egg white mixture over morsels and nuts. Sprinkle with remaining nuts.

Bake at 375 F for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm or cool. Cut into bars. Makes about 2 dozen squares.
